When did you start playing Roller Derby?
August 2016
What positions do you normally play/like to play?
At this point I still really enjoy it all except for anchoring. I'm not super fast going backwards yet. I'm a new jammer and I like it, but I find it very mentally challenging and intimidating.
What do you love about Roller Derby?
I have always loved roller skating and sports, so mixing the two is my perfect sport. This is better than just going to the gym for me. I like teamwork, competition, and strategy.
What do you love about Dutchland?
Dutchland has a super welcoming culture. Everyone is passionate about roller derby and invests time in building a community of new skaters, sponsors, fans, and partners. I remember being at my first bout and being pleasantly surprised by how many different people Dutchland has brought together.
Favorite Roller Derby moment?
Getting MVP jammer in my first game as a Dutchland Roller Blitz skater.
Most embarrassing Roller Derby moment?
Probably when I passed the panty to the wrong skater and got a penalty. She had to drop it and it caused a ton of confusion. There's a photo of the sad [helmet] panty just laying on the track. I just think of all the points that got scored on us while it was laying there, and I watched from the box.
What is one piece of advice you could give to newer girls or those who are thinking about joining Roller Derby?
Don't give up when it gets tough. It feels amazing when you overcome a hurdle you thought you couldn't. Even if it takes you a little longer, the entire team is always rooting for you.
What is one thing that Roller Derby/Dutchland helped you achieve?
Roller derby has given me an outlet to be competitive and aggressive. Being an adult, sometimes sports don't get to remain a part of our lives, but I love the routine of practices and games that I've had since middle school. Feels good to be back into an active sport where I'm constantly working on my game and improvement and having these moments where hard work pays off.
What has Roller Derby taught you?
Roller derby really confirms the value of hard work, patience, strategy, sacrifice, and trusting your teammates.
Anything you'd like to say to your adoring fans?
I don't think I have any adoring fans, at least not yet, but I know Dutchland does so to them I will say thank you for cheering us on. The energy you bring to the games makes playing so fun and I'm so excited for my rookie season!
