Ann Slanders

Anne Slanders
What first brought you to Dutchland?
I read an article on the internet called "Roller Derby Over 40" and thought, "Hey-- that sounds like fun!" I had just turned 43 and learned how to skate just so I could try out for Dutchland.
What is your favorite thing about the league?
I love the fact that the league has a place for skaters of all levels, even for those of us who don't or can't skate. Everyone has been so encouraging to me whether as a skater or a non-skating official. I also love the fact that Dutchland is family-friendly and that we focus on giving to charities, whether through contributing a portion of our bout proceeds or by participation-- Girls on the Run, Muscular Dystrophy Walk, helping out at the Domestic Violence Services dinner, things like that.
What made you decide to become an NSO?
Well, I had injured myself gardening (!!) about eight years ago and after a few months as a skater tot it became apparent that I was going to have to do some serious rehab on my knee if I was ever going to make it onto a team. It just so happened that right about the time I was coming to this realization, the head NSO for Dutchland decided to step down. It seemed like a no-brainer to step into the job, even though I didn't know a whole heck of a lot about anything!
What is your favorite thing about the sport of roller derby?
I love the fast pace of derby and also just the sheer physicality of it.
What do you like about your position in the league?
Certainly not all the paperwork I do as head NSO! Actually, I'm completely tickled by the irony of me holding this position in the first place. I have never been particularly interested in rules, regulations, or procedures and now I find myself being one of those who makes sure everyone is doing what they're supposed to do.
What was your inspiration for your derby name?
I always liked reading Ann Landers in the paper and my son accuses me of slandering him whenever I get after him for not doing what I've asked, like empty the dishwasher, so it seemed like the perfect name. And it makes me laugh.
You're also a proud Dutchland Sponsor! Anything you want to say about your business, Blue Planet Massage?
I've enjoyed sponsoring Dutchland, it has definitely been good for my business. Anyone who lets me know that they heard about Blue Planet through Dutchland receives a $10 discount off the regular $60 price of a one hour massage.
Anything else you would like fans to know about the league?
We are always in need of refs and officials! If anyone would like to be involved with the league but they don't have the ability or desire to skate, they should consider joining the officiating crew!
